Protect yourself and others from COVID-19

Check local advice where you live and work.

COVID-19 infection can occur through the eyes, nose, or mouth.

Take care and stay aware to prevent infection.

The 3 keys to prevent infection: practice social distancing, wear a mask, and wash or disinfect your hands frequently.

The proper way to wash your hands
  • Soap up your hands and wash them well with palms together

  • Extend the backs of your hands and rub with the palm of the opposite hand

  • Pay particular attention to the space between the nails and fingertips

  • Wash between your fingers

  • Twist your palms around your thumbs to wash them

  • Wash both wrists

Avoid the 3 Cs:

Closed spaces with poor ventilation, Crowded areas, and Close-contact settings.

Confined and enclosed places with poor ventilation

Open doors or windows frequently for ventilation (Don't forget, that includes when using air conditioners or heaters, too)

Crowded places with many people

Even outdoors, avoid activities with many people gathering tightly together (A few people walking or jogging together is OK)

Close-contact settings for conversing or speaking

Avoid dining in large groups
Leave every other seat empty, and don't sit directly across from one another
Exercise restraint in conversing in places like trains and elevators

In order to prevent infection

If you do become infected, continue to follow the 3 keys and avoid the 3 Cs above to keep from infecting others.

If you have cold-like symptoms

  • If you have symptoms such as a fever or sluggishness, please take the day off from work or school and refrain from going outside.
  • Please take your temperature every day and keep a record of it.

If you have symptoms such as a fever, first call your regular physician or the closest medical institution and talk to them. If at a loss as to what medical facility to contact, please consult with the checkup / consultation center (health care center) responsible for the city, town, or village where you live. If any of the following apply to you, please consult with the center immediately!

You have any serious symptoms such as shortness of breath (difficulty breathing), extreme sluggishness (fatigue), or high fever

Those whose conditions could easily grow more severe*, if they have relatively light, cold-like symptoms such as fever or a cough
* the elderly, those with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, heart condition, respiratory disease (COPD, etc.), those undergoing dialysis, taking immunosuppressants or anticancer drugs, etc.

Those not listed above with mild, cold-like symptoms such as cough and fever should definitely consult a doctor if they persist more than 4 days.
